Photographs from John E. Hoyle's papers relating to San Quentin Prison
O.P. Annex souvenir

Creator/Contributor:

Hoyle, John E., creator

Abstract:

Photographs show various views of life at San Quentin Prison, but most show various types of entertainment offered for the prisoners (prisoner vaudeville and minstrel shows, Sarah Bernhardt's 1913 performance there, etc.). Other views show men playing baseball, prison interiors and the furniture shop, mug shots of prisoners including death row inmates of the 1890s, and views of warden John E. Hoyle's office. One souvenir cabinet card, titled O.P. Annex souvenir, has a composite of an electric chair and mug shots of 31 prisoners executed at the Ohio Penitentiary, with the dates of their deaths and their crimes. Box 1, folders 1-3: San Quentin prison views, exterior and interior -- folder 4: several out-of-state prison photographs, including O.P. Annex executions cabinet card and two views of an Illinois prison (at Joliet?) -- folder 5: Sarah Bernhardt at San Quentin in A scene from Une nuit de Noel (or A Christmas night during the Terror), Feb. 22, 1913 -- folder 6: miscellaneous entertainment including baseball, vaudeville, and a band -- folders 7-11: performance(s) of the San Quentin Minstrel and Vaudeville Company (album, souvenir album, and various photographs) -- folder 12: baseball and band. Box 2, folders 1-3: prisoner mug shots, chiefly identified only by prisoner number -- folder 4: mug shots notebook of death penalty murder convicts, 1890s, with names and convictions on boards in image -- folders 5-7: various people presumably including staff, officials, and visitors -- folder 8: furniture, presumably products of prison labor -- folder 9: miscellaneous photographs including a 1913 prison snowman, safes (possibly manufactured by prisoners?), and a desk and chair probably built by prisoners. Oversize (AX folder): five mounted photographs of vaudeville performances.
